Appaloosa (Uncommon Markings)

Appaloosa

BigDivider

Appaloosa is a marking that adds a large, lighter-colored blanket on the beasts’ lower back and buttocks.
This blanket must look quite patchy / blotchy and be filled with holes without breaking it up into multiple patches to give it the trademark look of appaloosa. The holes can be any size from small to big, but they must have the general shape of ovals or circles to avoid too much similarity with Pied.
Additionally to the regular Appaloosa, there are two (2) combinations with other markings available as well: Snowflake Appaloosa and Varnish. Snowflake Appaloosa requires Speckles while Varnish needs Speckles and Roan to be created.
While all other markings listed as “Designer’s choice” under Layering will be beneath Appaloosa, Spotting is allowed to go over Appaloosa despite technically having to go under it!
The color of it can be pure white (HEX: #FFFFFF, RGB: rgb(255,255,255)) but slightly off-white colors are okay too as long as it is still recognizable as white, looks natural and is not overly yellow or blue.
This marking and its variations were inspired by the appaloosa coloration found on horses, feel free to take them as inspiration if you have troubles designing your beast!

Colors

Appaloosa is relevant to and will always be lighter than the base coat color of the beast.
Alternatively, Appaloosa may be white as well, no matter the base coat color. This includes using pure white (HEX: #FFFFFF, RGB: rgb(255,255,255)) as well as slightly off-white colors as long as they are still recognizable as white, look natural and are not overly yellow or blue.
Feel free to use the following swatch one if you feel uncomfortable picking your own colors!

Please open the sta.sh link by clicking on the swatch and save the image, as taking colors from screenshots or copy-pasted versions might influence the colors. This often leads us to not being able to find the corresponding color on the swatch, and we have to send your design to corrections!

Edges

Appaloosa must have a hard edge.
Additionally, it is possible to add a slightly lighter-colored, equally hard-edged halo around the original edge.

Combinations with other markings

Marking combinations are optional and can be used on designs if the needed markings are present, but do not have to.

Snowflake Appaloosa:
The markings needed for this combination are Appaloosa and Speckles.
The Appaloosa itself may cover more than the official Appaloosa range but should not cover more than 70% of the body. The Speckles may be larger than usual as well and clump together. The size of the Speckles should not be bigger than your beast’s eye! Using this combination, you may also add breaks in your Appaloosa design.

Varnish:
The markings needed for this combination are Appaloosa, Speckles and Roan.
This combination is almost the same as the Snowflake Appaloosa one, the difference being Roan allowing you to make all edges Textured (both Hard and Soft may be used). However, if you use this combination, you may not add Roan as a regular marking to your design anymore!
